Visiting the crop circles
The concept of crop circles is often referred to in connection with the UFO-phenomenon, although we still do not know how the circles actually come about.
The last ten years have brought a substantial increase in crop circle activity and complexity. And it is in the southern England that the circles occur in the greatest number. NETI’s (a Norwegian UFO-organisation) envoy has visited the area to take a closer look at this year’s circles.
By Signe H. Einseth
The phenomenon of crop circles was already thoroughly elucidated in an earlier article in this magazine, UFO-Nytt nr. 4 / 1999 (published by NETI, Ed.). For this reason we will not cover all the scientific aspects of the phenomenon this time. This article is a travel account, and a rapport of a layman’s experiences visiting the English crop circles and the landscapes in which they appear.
It is hard not to be influenced by the serenity and the beauty of the flat, southern English landscapes with its enormous fields, perfect for crop circle makers! They’re like a canvas just waiting for the artist.
The grain fields were already, in the end of July, abundantly decorated. As the bus took us through the landscape, the circles appeared, one after another, each with a unique pattern. In the beginning, every new circle made us gasp for air and shout with joy. After a while however, we turned almost blasé, "oh, there’s another one". But then, towards the end of the tour, when we’d got the chance to digest the impressions, the feeling of awe and wonder takes control. "What ever are these things? Where do they come from? The area is peppered with them, new ones appearing every day!" It was almost annoying not being able to answer these questions.
On our journey we were about to visit 6-7 circles, that is, we were litterally to go "inside" them. In before hand, I had been reading about the subject, seen videos, been told that they were fantastic, that the crop was sometimes "interlaced", heared about presicion, and about "sacredness".... We left the bus, and entered the first crop circle.
I was disappointed. It was not that impressive! The patterns were not as sharp as they seem in pictures. The stalks weren't curved as described in books, but were just lying flat, from the bent point above the root. And where was the "braided bundles"? I only saw flat plants in maybe two or three layers…I kneeled down. Where the stalks parted in different directions it looked as though it had been parted with a comb, but not too carefully. Were the plants withered? …. No.
The circle was gigantic. It was impossible to get an impression of the pattern while standing in the middle of it. And what about the "holy feeling"? To be honest, I didn’t feel anything special. "Grain is grain". I pottered back to my companions.
In the middle of the formation a group of people surrounded "the column of energy" that is believed to rise from the centre of the formations. Sceptically, I put my hand into the column. "Hmmm…? This is not possible…. Yes, I could feel the energy! Strange". I withdrew my hand, and put it back in again. And again I felt a column of warm energy. "Amazing"! A person explained to me that often a tuft of standing crop is left in the centre of the formation, and that the energy there is often quite strong for a long time afterwards.
We left for the next circle, which was considered a lot weaker energy wise than the first one. Still things happened in this formation that intrigued me. A group of people sat down in a ring in the middle of the formation to meditate.
- One of the persons suddenly received a message "from above", and there and then she started to channel it.
- After a while, another woman, apparently a Native American, started singing in a beautiful manner while kneeling and bending down, forehead towards the ground.
- Some shed tears…
It became clear that "something" gave rise to strong feelings in those present. Which might support the idea of crop circles as "temporary temples". That is, that crop circles tend to "open" some people’s minds to spiritual experiences.
In the last circle we visited that day the energies felt completely chaotic. This circle, called "The magnetic Field", is may be familiar to people visiting the Internet regularly.

This formation appeared the 22nd of July, and was six days old when we visited it. By the use of dowsing rods, pendulums and natural sensitivity, we found that the energies were moving clockwise in one of the centres and anti-clock wise in the other. At the periphery of the formation, outside the magnetic pattern, the energy moved clockwise. Whereas between the uttermost pointed diamonds the energy was anti-clockwise. (This seemed strange to me, and I had to verify it trying the rods myself. My amateur like testing gave the same results.) "Sensitive" persons that I spoke to experienced the energies in the formations as chaotic and running in all directions.
Seen from inside of the formation, the pattern looked like it was made up of many diamonds of standing plants, varying in size, and arranged in increasing arches towards the periphery. The innermost diamonds were, with an incredible precision, made up of only of 10-12 stalks. Seen from the ground the pattern appeared very complex and intricate. Seen from the air, it was absolutely breathtaking and made a great impression on us all.
The trip also took us to other places worth seeing. We went to places like Stonehenge, Avebury, Silbury Hill and Land’s End. On our way back home, we also stopped to see a smaller stone circle, St. Michael’s Mound and St. Michael’s Church. Some of these ancient, holy places, up to 5000 years old, are believed to hold special energies that are involved in the crop circle phenomenon.
On our way towards Salisbury, we stopped at the local "waterhole", The Barge Inn, which also functions as a central of information for crop circle activity in the area. Afterwards our bus struggled its way on small causeways not at all made for larger vehicles, to transport us to the crop circles in the neighbourhood. The first one was the rosette below Milk Hill not far from the Alton Barnes White Horse.

To get to the circle, we walked Dark helicopters passed in the What we know for sure is that for ("So…..who are they, anyway?")
|
Our next circle was a new one, reported the same morning at 9.30. Here we had the chance to experience the virginal feeling of entering a fresh crop circle. Personally I feel that this experience was exaggerated, but perhaps this is because it is necessary with a great vigilance to register all the details. Many look upon the crop circle tourists as "vandals" who, without the necessary sensitivity, trample holy ground.
The "spiritual contact" in our party, shortly after having entered the circle, channelled a message. The message, which was announced to come from The Pleiades, said: "We are here to help you remembering who you really are. Also remember that the force is much stronger than you think". I asked if this meant that the Pleiadians made this circle. The channel expressed that they had assisted in the creation of the circle.
Again we saw dark helicopters in the sky above us. The time was not more than one p.m., but people with video cameras were already in the circle, and long poles at the periphery of the circle told us that they had also filmed from above. The cameraman was surprisingly intrusive and zoomed in directly on our faces. When we asked him who they were, we got no answer. Their attitude was quite unfriendly. And on further inquiry from our side, we only got new questions in reply. They wanted to know what we experienced upon visiting the circle, what the channelling had revealed, and what we thought about the message. We had a very unpleasant feeling about the whole situation.
Not far from us a woman was kneeling while carefully lifting up the crops here and there. We were surprised to see that it was the renowned researcher, author and lecturer Linda Moulton Howe. She could tell us that the next circle we had planned to visit was revealed as a hoax and that it was known who had made it. However she recommended that we visited it because it would be useful to us to see a man-made formation. But sadly, knowing this, we were no longer objective and thus not able to test if we could have revealed it as man-made ourselves. Bad luck!
But not all the persons in our party had heard Howe’s comments, and upon entering the next formation I registered comments such as. "Hey…what has happened here? " This really looks like a mess!" The healer in our group struggled to find explanations as to why the energy pattern of the formation was difficult to grasp. Most of us didn’t feel any energy at all in this circle, the dowsing rods did not react, and the pendulum hung straight down. Personally I didn’t see the big difference between this formation and the other ones, but I felt that this one was completely "dead". The plants lay on the ground in a messy manner, and even the standing crops looked untidy. But I am convinced that it is easy to be fooled, and that it takes a great deal of experience to separate the genuine ones from the fakes. (The circle in question was located in Blacklands, Calne in Wiltshire and was reported the 30th of July)
For those who consider channelling to be a genuine part of reality, I will include the answer that was given when the channeller asked whether the circle was genuine or not: "That is not important. What matters is how you react to the crop circles. This circle is, however, more physical than the others you have seen". The time of oracles is thus not over…. Why is it not possible simply to obtain a "yes" or a "no"?
As a novice in the field, I regret not to have done certain simple tests as for instance to check out whether the mobile phone worked inside and outside the circles, and whether watches and cameras functioned normally. The only thing reported was that a mechanical wristwatch that used to slow down 2-3 minutes every day, was now five minutes ahead of time.
I might also have checked the plants for node cavities, but I didn’t. Anyway, I guess that such observations made by an amateur would not have been scientific and thus of little value.
Back in Glastonbury, we had the time to stroll the streets of the charming little town and to digest all the strong impressions. Glastonbury, that is an experience in it self, has long been known as a centre for "the alternative", where you can find peace at mind and spiritual priming if that’s what you need. The town has for a long time been a centre for the ancient holy sites in the area, and has thus for decades attracted "spiritually seeking" persons. One gets the feeling that crop circles are not really considered a mystery down here; they are just a part of everyday life.
Our journey also included the three days long conference "The Glastonbury Symposium", lead by the renowned crop circle researchers Karen Douglas and Andy Thomas. Lecturers from many countries contribute with subjects related to the crop circle phenomenon.
Steven Greer spoke at the conference, if only for an hour. He claimed that the crop circles are created by the assistance of the earth’s own gravity field. At the same time as other forces are at work from above, this gravity, in a way, "pulls" the crops downwards. He finished by stressing that CSETI is still firmly determined to carry out the announced disclosure of the UFO phenomenon, and that the date for this disclosure is now set.
Both Karen Douglas and Linda Moulton Howe gave wonderful lectures accompanied by very interesting pictures.
I also want to hold out a Dutch lecturer Eltjo Haselhoff, who is also a researcher with a PHD in physics and a specialist in high power laser physics. He also have had a one-year engagement at Los Alamos Laboratories in USA as a specialist in free-electron lasers and high current electron beam accelerators. This young man who does research on crop circles in his spare time, called his lecture "Challenging the Scientists". And that’s really what he did.
Haselhoff’s research on crop circles has, among other things, looked at the uncovering of hidden, complex geometry, Hawkins theorems, coincidence, dehydration, germination tests, measuring of node lengths, electromagnetic radiation tests, presence of light phenomena (and warmth) in connection with the occurrence of crop circles.
His latest research project has now been admitted in "Science"*, a most prestigious scientific publication that rejects 95% of all incoming articles. Science has spent half a year to go through his research material.
Conclusion: This means that scientific circles now accept that balls of light are involved in the creation of crop circles! (I asked Haselhoff about this and he confirmed that I had got it right.) This research is no less than revolutionising, and will, as he soberly puts it, stand undisputed until somebody proves otherwise.
His article will be published in the September/October/November edition of Science (2000, Ed.).
So, look out!
